Code of Ethics

Introduction

The Code of Ethics is a public statement of the values and principles used in promoting and maintaining high standards of professional behavior in occupational therapy.

It is a consensus document based on universal principles and provides guidelines for professionals for ethical behaviour, responsibilities, ethical reasoning, problem solving and decision making in their professional practice.

A Code of Ethics is a professional tool for logical analysis of a situation and decision making, since it enriches our thought processes. It is part of our clinical reasoning procedure and helps us to reach well thought out decisions.

In this section of the website you will find three documents related to Code of Ethics, all three documents are linked together but can be used separately depending on your individual needs

1. How to developing Codes of Ethics – COTEC Policy and Guidelines
2. A power point presentation on how to use a workshop to ‘Develop a National Code of Ethics’
3. A power point presentation on how to use a workshop to develop ‘Ethical reasoning’

The working group is fully aware this is an ongoing process and these documents are open for debate, we decided to publish these documents and see if and how they are used. Based on feedback we will revise and adapt them accordingly.

Feedback on both documents and the way you have made use of them would be very much appreciated.

Developing Codes of Ethics – COTEC Policy and Guidelines

The Guidelines for the development of a Code of Ethics is a PDF document, this document has been developed over a 7 years period. Although the initial intention was to revise the COTEC European Code of Ethics (1996), it was decided to establish guidelines instead as it became apparent in 2006 that one European Code of Ethics would not meet the needs of all the member associations nor all the occupational therapists in the countries involved due to too may differences in national constitution, legislation, cultural issues and history/development of the profession.

Furthermore, a Code of Ethics is a consensus document, which requires a democratic and interactive approach to procedure and decision-making. The Council decided a guideline should be developed to assist member associations to make individual national Code of Ethics.

This document will be enable you starting the process of creating or revising your national Code of Ethics. The document describes and explains the COTEC policy and gives recommendations on content of a Code of Ethics. Also the steps to be taken in the developmental process within your National Association are explained.
